It is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan and holds the record for being the largest, most comprehensive Hindu temple in the world. Known for its stunning architecture, the Akshardham Temple comprises eight flamboyantly-carved mandapams. The Akshardham Temple Architecture in Delhi is similar to its sister complex in Gandhinagar in Gujarat, Its construction was overseen by a team of eight holy men and scholars of the Pancharatra Shastra, a Hindu scripture on architecture and deity carving.
More than 11,000 artisans, construction workers, and volunteers helped build this outstanding structure which today stands tall as an example of India’s rich cultural and religious heritage. Akshardham Temple is located near the banks of River Yamuna in east Delhi and features about 20,000 statues, floral motifs, beautiful arches, and intricately carved pillars.
The sprawling lawns of Akshardham Temple are spread over 100 acres and adorned with stunning water fountains and skillfully carved pavilions. The temple covers an area of 86,342 square feet and is 356 feet (109 m) long, 316 feet (96 m) wide, and 141 feet (43 m) high. The temple complex also features exhibitions on events from the life of Swaminarayan and the history of India.
There is also an IMAX theater in the complex and a musical fountain based on the message of the Upanishads. Akshardham Temple also holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest comprehensive Hindu temple.
